Your Ford Tempo warranty has already expired, so you will need something to replace it. It is called an extended warranty.
Extended warranties come in three variations: bumper-to-bumper, stated component and drive train. All three are designed to help you reduce stress and save money.
Bumper-to-bumper warranties are normally only available for Ford Tempos that have some of their original warranty remaining. (Extended warranty companies consider any car, truck or SUV that has some of the original warranty remaining on it a "new" vehicle.) The last new Ford Tempo rolled off the assembly line in 1994, so it is highly unlikely that you would be eligible for a bumper-to-bumper extended warranty, unless you have found a Tempo hidden away somewhere.
A "stated component" warranty covers only "stated" components. This means that whatever components are listed in the policy, only those are covered. Companies will normally suggest this type of warranty for trucks, cars, vans, and SUVs that have in excess of 100,000 miles on the odometer. A stated-component warranty insures items like the transmission, engine, alternator, radiator, and water pump. The warranty may also cover seals, gaskets, and electronic components like video and stereo equipment, and navigation and security systems. There are "smart" versions of this type of warranty which means you, the owner and driver, can specify the parts you want covered. This is in contrast to a "fixed" list of components.
For drive train protection, consider a drive train warranty. It obviously only protects your Ford Tempo's drivetrain; that is your engine, transmission, drive shaft and drive axles. You might be able to obtain an "enhanced coverage" drivetrain warranty that will protect a few other components on your Tempo, like your stereo and/or video system. Check with your provider.
While researching extended warranties, don't forget: price is just one of the items you need to find out about. You also need to find out which components are covered and for how long. Hint: Remember to inquire about added benefits such rental car services and towing.
Some people add an extended-warranty to their Ford Tempo used car loan payment. This is OK, but be aware that buying from a company that specializes in selling extended warranties, as opposed to companies that partner with auto finance companies, will most likely get you a better deal.
Quite a few extended warranties are transferable. This means that for a small charge you can transfer the policy to a new buyer if you sell your Ford Tempo. This is something you as the seller will want to make sure you mention to a potential buyer.
Did you know an extended warranty can also protect you against inflation? Here's how it works. The cost of parts and labor are likely to go up. But when you buy a Ford Tempo extended warranty, it provides coverage at the rate at which you signed up. In other words, your extended warranty company is locked into paying so much for repairs, no matter how much the cost of labor and parts increase.
