Keeping the exterior of your Ford Tempo in tip-top condition is a great idea for many reasons. Here are a few.
A neglected or damaged vehicle makes resale a difficult job. Road grime, dirt, and salt can wear away the paint and surfaces of your vehicle, making it look beat-up and old.
Repairing a body part is often more difficult than a mechanical repair, which usually means simply replacing a worn-out component. As any body-shop worker can tell you, repairing body components requires patience, skill, time and effort. Follow these simple body maintenance suggestions to keep your Tempo looking great.
Once a year or every 12,000 miles, have the underside of your Tempo steam-cleaned. This will remove oil residue and dirt. Then, if you desire, you can more easily inspect the area for rust, damaged cables and brake lines, frayed electrical wires, and other problems.
Also every 12,000 miles or once a year, steam clean/degrease your vehicle's engine compartment.
Your Ford Tempo's wheel wells deserve close attention. The tires can throw up stones and dirt and the undercoating can peel away, causing the paint to chip and flake; and this can allow rust to set in, too. If you discover any rust, sand the area down to bare metal, then paint with a rust-inhibiting paint.
Wash your Tempo's entire exterior body once a week. Hose it down water to loosen the dirt, then use a good car wash product and a wash mitt to clean the body surfaces. Start with the roof, the hood, and the trunk areas and work your way down.
To remove asphalt and tar, use a rag soaked in kerosene.
If you use a chrome cleaner to clean chromed parts, use it sparingly. Why? Because chrome cleaners, in addition to removing dirt and grime, also remove a little of the chrome each time you use them.
Once every six months, polish or wax the body. Use a paste wax for added protection on the chromed parts.
To clean exterior vinyl parts, use plain soap and water. Do not use detergents, caustic soaps, or petroleum-based products - they are simply not necessary. For engrained dirt on your Tempo's vinyl areas, use a soft brush, soap, and water. After cleaning, apply a high-quality rubber/vinyl protectant to prevent oxidation and cracks. Hint: also apply this protectant to weather stripping, vacuum lines, and rubber hoses on other parts of your Ford Tempo to help protect from chemical degradation.
Spray your rims and wheel covers with a brake dust remover, then wash them with soap and water.
Wash your tires with soap and water, and use the same high-quality rubber/vinyl protectant that you used on your vinyl parts to protect your Tempo's tires.
